David came to my bed at 6:30 am two nights ago and said, "Momma I saw something behind my eyes." Somehow I immediately knew he was telling me he had a dream. So I asked him to tell me about it. I have always been a dreamer, but after I became pregnant with my first babies I started to really understand my dreams. I have created a journal of most of dreams in the past four years and they are ALWAYS meaningful in my life. The more quickly I respond by writing them down, the more sense they make and I feel like its my very personal way of communicating directly with my Heavenly Father. It fascinates me!
So as David is thoughtfully staring at the ceiling as if trying to remember exactly what it was about, he said something along the lines "You took me to the swimming pool with Cami and Jo-jo. It was fun to be there with you." I asked him where Daddy was and he very matter-of-factly said, "Oh daddy was at work." I asked him if he was ok with that and he said, "Yes, it was still fun. Sometimes dads just have to work." The interesting thing is that maybe this dream was more comforting to me than it was to David. This past month has been a whirlwind really...and I felt like I was pulled in a million directions. Alex is also very busy but as I heard this little three year old tell about "what he saw behind his eyes" I was strangely comforted. Like I'm doing ok. I also recognized that David's love language is quality time.
Today his teacher commented that David is well behaved at school and consistently works on his projects with ease and confidence. I walked past his classroom and peeked in just long enough to watch him to the "hand washing" work. I'm sure he has his moments of silliness in the classroom, but he was so focused on practicing the things he'd been taught with a strange order about that I realized how important it is to take the time to teach our kids, instead of doing everything for them. When I get distracted with not-so-important things I get even more stressed out because my kids or more disobedient and honestly I feel like they are intentionally trying to make messes so I can clean them up. MORAL OF THIS STORY IS....he's happy when mom is with him, and he understands that dad (and mom) have other obligations, and he doesn't really ask for much. So yes, most things can wait. And I'm grateful for this sweet boy who gave a gently reminder of what is most important in all the seeming chaos sometimes, and for that comforting feeling of
you're doing ok...and you can do a little better ;)
